By honoring our veterans, their legacy will never be forgotten

The Dodge County Patriot Project is a collaborative effort between Dodge County Veterans Services, Dodge County GIS Department, local veteran organizations and community volunteers to locate and honor our Dodge County Veterans' final resting place. The Patriot Project will assist in placement of flags and wreaths for Memorial Day/Veterans Day, researchers and family members find Veterans who have been laid to rest in Dodge County.

With over 4,000 veteran gravesites, this project is ongoing and continually growing. If you would like to add Veterans, please see below instructions on how to add a veteran's final resting place.

If you would like more information on the program or for volunteer opportunities, please reach out to Dodge County Veterans Services at VeteransOffice@co.dodge.wi.us or 920-386-3978

They say everyone dies twice in their life. When a person takes their last breath and the last time their name is spoken. Please help us remember our local veterans and honor their service.

Cemetery Etiquette

Please remain respectful while visiting cemeteries.

Here are some helpful items to remember:

  • Be quiet and considerate
  • Respect the gravesites (walking on top of graves, leaning on stones)
  • Do not disturb others - please be mindful of ongoing funerals, funeral processions and those grieving their loved ones.
  • Check for specific cemetery rules

National Park Service Cemetery Etiquette

Coins on a Veteran's Headstone? Please leave it. This is a tradition that dates back to the Roman Empire, but in the U.S. this practice became more common after the Vietnam War. A coin left on a headstone is to let the family know that someone stopped to pay their respect. This is typically done at a veteran cemetery, but may be encountered at any cemetery. Each coin has a specific meaning.

A penny means you visited.

A nickel means you and the deceased veteran trained at boot camp together.

A dime means you and the deceased veteran served together.

A quarter means you were there when the veteran died - typically while actively serving.

Acknowledgements

Dodge County Veterans Services would like to say thank you to Washington County Veteran Service Office with their assistance in creating this project based off of their own Veteran Grave Geo-Cache Project.

We would also like to thank Dodge County GIS Land and Information Department for building the survey and map. Without their support, this project would not exist.

Thank you to the volunteers that did the physical leg work of plotting while the program was being built.
